My '86 ssp
« on: November 14, 2009, 11:00:59 AM »
I had trouble uploading orig content. Sucks as I had a lot of background info & I'm a slow typer. So I will try again with less. I've owned this car since Dec. 91. Most mods are to the drivetrain.

Ok, for some background info. I've owned this thing since Dec.'91. Because it's a ssp car I don't want to lose all of it's orginality. The drive train is where the mods are. Basically I have the 4th engine in it now. The head pictures were to show Jason(jtmustang) what they looked like when I got them back from C.I. This car on the orig '86 drive train went 16.40 @ 88. A '80's Dodge turbo k-car or something DROVE around me on the top end. I was pissed! Turns out the factory cats were notorius for plugging up. Car went 15.30's @ 92 with new exh (on gatorbacks). Car ran best 12.31 @112.5 under great conditions with 3rd engine (1st 347). I have yet to run the current 347(4th). I hope to go faster. I'll try to add a couple of current engine pics on this upload

I have some mint 17" x 8" factory five spokes from a 2001 gt that would look good on your car.
If you're interested, let me know.  I'll let them go pretty cheap.
I need room in the shop.

btw...  very clean ssp you have there. ;D

Thanks for the offer for the '01 wheels 347 HO. You know, I believe they would look good. But.... the originality curse. I still want to be able to mount the  4-hole 15x7 steelys for shows, rarity,& I think they fit the theme of the car. The car drives & handles way better with 245/50's on my 16 ponys tho. Yea Jason I do want to do some suspension work. We have a dragstrip close by so the torque box area is one concern. I would like to be able to 60' consistently in the 1.6's. I also want reasonable handling on the street. So.. tall order there.  Hell.. I'm still yet to go all out on that new bullet   :naughty:

Well the local track here shut down 1st week Oct. I just got it running with new engine 2nd week Sept. I had some drivability issues(vacuum leak, bad tps) that took some time to solve. I also put a 75mm tb on it. Can't go any bigger with this Systemax. Actually the thing runs like crap on a cold start up. Once I get about 140-160 water temp she runs pretty smooth.
I used the info from Jay's cam card, & a vacuum gauge. I set the idle vacuum @ 14". Seems to work,in rpms it will range from 900- 1200. I'm sure thats not the correct way, but the thing drives great & runs hard. I'm sure there's more tuning left in it.
As far as suspension, pretty much stock. I do have some weld on BBK subframe connectors from the mid- 90's. I'm currently running 4.30's with a eaton 31 spline posi. Funny thing is, the car actually was as quick running 3.73's. Was able to 60' in the 1.7's, 1/8 mi as fast as 7.9 with newer 26/8.5 ET Drags. I think combined with the 3.35 1st gear, more wear on slicks, the 4.30's just are'nt optimal for my stock suspension.  :dunno:  I thought at the time, more gear accelerate quicker?

I probly will look at the team Z stuff. Right now work is SLOW , so money's tight. All though a guy should'nt have to much $$$ in a torque box upgrade I wouldn't think.

well the torque box part ain't bad..

u can make some if u have the tools or i just bought wild rides complete kit  for 80 bux and comes with all the bolts and plates for the uppers and lowers.

and along with the tq boxes i would look into a set of their upper and lower c. arms..

I'm saving my monies for some dbl. adj upper and lowers along with a k member setup.. :naughty:..

Besides scraping undercoat off welded areas. How much is there to those T-box kits? I wonder, can you just seal weld seams & add gussets where needed? I'm a sheetmetal worker so that would be doable for me. Does the t-box kit that you have tie in thru the floor & have reinforced mounts for the UC arms? Some of that stuff uses $2 in material then charge the customer $100. My BBK subframe connectors are a example of this. Probly 5'  of 1"x2" tube steel with ears to weld to the chassis.  I've read that it can be a real mess if you do destroy the factory t-boxes. Don't want to find the hard way. I put the $$$ under the hood this year.  ;D

pretty much sandwich's they body between these plates at the boxes..and then weld inside the car and then all the stuff underneath ,   and yeah they are overpriced but what do u do when u ain't got the tools and stuff..buy it..lol..they are pretty thick , close to 1/8" thick

here is a pic of the same kit i got..

and a link to them and ya they're kit is 150 bux but i only paid 80 for both.. ;)

LOL...  I made mine using about 15.00 worth of scrap metal.

I've just noticed it's the only part of my build I didn't take pictures of.  Shit...  I was going to post pictures.

Thanks for the pic's  jt mustang!  :note:   The wheels ( in brain) are turning. Like I said earlier, money's tight so there won't be as much off season car work for me.  Another area that is a concern for me is my high milage t-5. I spent some time perusing sbf tech's  manual trans section. OMG! Lots to learn! You don't realize  how involved setting up the right trans for you app can be. About as hard as choosing the right cyl heads . And then there's clutches.... :unh: My thanks tho,  to the people that have took the time to make such info available.   :applause:
