lets talk 8.8 with 9" ends
« on: December 19, 2010, 06:11:15 PM »
Well i am kinda green in this whole area. And i just went and cut off the Quad shock brackets as they wont be used anymore on my 8.8. and have been going back and forth about running the c-clip elim's or go with the 9" ends...as i want to weld up the tubes and straighten at the same time. and well the 9" end just seems to be a better design overall and really want to go this way.

now i am confused on all the different ends sizes, bolt pattern and such.i have been searching and reading a lot on this lately.

--alright so im gathering i think..that i want the "new " big bearing ends  ?

-also brake options..i have heard/read that u can make a explorer rear setup work  (95-99)

..or run a aftermarket setup..but dont know what kit/brand would be good for a  street/strip duty car,,?  and if i needed this kit...options..?

thanks and sorry this got so long..trying to digest all that i can hear and figure a game plan out..

also can someone (dana i know u have a good guy to do this stuff that might very well end up doing my stuff) how much for a ballpark figure to cut and weld the ends on and weld up/straighten the tubes..?

thanks  ;D

This is the shop that does my rear-end work and a lot more.
http://www.scribnerwelding.com

Give Bill a call and tell him what you want.  He can give you a pretty good wag on the cost to you.
He's a one man show, so if you want your stuff by a certain time-frame, you gotta give him time to do the job.

It will be done right and you'll get way more than you pay for in service.

allright maybe im getting in a hurry here about axle length and such.

i think i need to just get the work done and the figure out which brake kit/setup ill use and then figure axles.

but not sure if i will go the explorer disk route and then later step up to a better wilwood, strange, etc setup. as i have read that the exp.'s have the 2.5 brake offset like others offer.

but any other info is welcomed.  ;D

It's not really worth narrowing the axles if you don't "back-half" the chassis.

You probably can go 2" shorter combined and make it easier to buy wide wheels (offset), but I dunno.

For the housing ends,

http://www.currieenterprises.com/cestore/productsRE.aspx?id=3525

For the brakes,

http://www.currieenterprises.com/cestore/productsRE.aspx?id=1229

You can get most of the brake parts out of a wrecking yard, and since there are millions of
Exploders on the road, parts are cheep and available just about anywhere...

Steve and the Rockette...
Too many toys to list...

yep i seen these steve..been searching a shitload..and the explorer route seems like a easy way to piece together a setup..but not sure yet.

i was just gonna shorten the ends some for the future, trying to not do things twice over...as i would like to mini tub it now..shit the more i look at it i want to put a cage in it right now. :note:

and i have no wheels right now so..

Then yes, I would shorten them at minimum 1" per side.
You could get away with that and a big wheel with only grinding down that lip inside your fender on the frame.

If you go any deeper, you'll have to cut part of the frame out as Dave at TeamZ did/does or just cut the frame off where I did and weld in your own 2"x3" or 2"x4" and set them more narrow than stock.

gotcha. i guess ill have to see once i get the rear done and some rims mocked up or whatnot.

i emailed strange to see what they said and they pointed me in the way of a wilwood kit, we'll see he said to call them as they had some newer stuff also that would fit the bill that is not in their catalog yet,

also sent bill a email 2 days ago and still awaiting a reply.

I don't think he'll answer email right now.
He's extremely busy.
I suggest you call and talk with him.  Let him know I referred you.
He will have the Wilwood brake setup recommendation for your setup.  Wilwood makes and sells brakes, but Bill makes housings and KNOWS what brakes fit and work on them much better than Wilwood.
Please treat him good as he's also a good friend as you are to me.
